Actually, I push books |
2. Anything by Melina Marchetta. She is the best.
3. Persuasion by Jane Austen. A lot of people have read Pride and Prejudice, but I love Persuasion almost as much and not nearly enough people have read it.
4. North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell. I also recommend this to fans of Pride and Prejudice; it's a lot darker but has the same kind of awesomesauce hate-turned-love story and a totally swoon-worthy hero.
5. Stuart: A Life Backwards by Alexander Masters. I was blown away by this biography when I read it last year so I push it on to everbody.
6. Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins. The lame name and cover for this book really don't do its delightfulness justice (although it has had a redesign!), so I try to tell everybody how fun and non-lame it really is.
7. Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey. I devoured this book in a day. It's a remarkable, beautifully-crafted Australian story featuring brilliant characters.
8. Sea Hearts by Margo Lanagan. I read this quite recently but I've already pushed it onto several people. Such a sublime read.
9. Bitter Greens by Kate Forsyth. A gorgeous fairy tale adaptation/historical romance. It's pure magic.
10. The Princess Bride by William Goldman. I think pretty much everyone has seen the movie (if you haven't, what are you doing with your life?!) but not a lot have read the book, which is a shame because it's wonderful.

I really have to read Jasper Jones one day. I've heard such good things from other Aussie book bloggers. Great list! Very thoughtful.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Jasper Jones is definitely worth a read :)
DeleteLove this list, Belle. And I'm so happy to find another North & South fan! I adore that book (and the mini-series, hello Mr Thornton!).
ReplyDeleteI've heard really good things about The Princess Bride, though I never get around to reading it. I need to do that soon..
Ahhh Mr Thornton, I love him so. Richard Armitage is brilliant as Thornton - his voice makes me want to do bad things.
DeleteThe Princess Bride!
ReplyDeleteInconceivable!
DeleteI absolutely love your list! North & South & Persuasion & The Book Thief are some of my all-time favs :D I also loved Anna & the French Kiss. I still need to try Melina Marchetta (I know, what am I waiting for?) And yeah, I still haven't read The Princess Bride. I'll have to check out the rest of your recommendations!
ReplyDeleteOh you won't regret MM! Or TPB :)
DeleteAww Anna and the French Kiss :) I agree, the title and cover make it look so lame and like crappy YA, but it's really fun and smart and SUPER sweet. I was surprised that I enjoyed it so much.
ReplyDeleteI was too. I wasn't expecting to like it so it really blew me away.
DeleteGreat post! I still need to read Anna and the French Kiss. :D

It's so lovely!
DeleteThe Princess Bride! YES! It made my list too. Your enthusiasm for this book/movie just amps mine up THAT much more!
ReplyDeleteThe Book Thief is high on my list of "to-reads" and I guess I just need to muster up the courage to actually sit down and go through it. I think I'm a little afraid to feel all the feels that I know will come along because of this book. And yeah. I've read nothing by Austen... yet. I'm working on it though! I swear!
The Book Thief will give you ALL THE FEELINGS but it is so worth it.
DeleteI just recommended Anna and the FK the other day to someone who occasionally reads YA. I hope she reads it.
ReplyDeleteYay! I got a co-worker to read it and she loooved it which made me happy.
DeleteWill definitely check out some of these books. And YES - The Book Thief is the #1 book I push on people. Every time I see it in a used book store I buy it so I can give it away. It's on the top of my "to read again" pile. (If only I had time to read books again!)
ReplyDeleteI wish I had time to reread too, but I barely have enough to read books for the first time!
DeleteAgreed on 1 and 2 so much. I still have some Melina to read, but what I have read so far has been amazing. The Book Thief pretty much changed my life.
ReplyDeleteI still need to read Jasper Jones, but I bought it at least!
I just finished all of Marchetta's books earlier this year and now I'm hanging for more! I'm so excited about the On the Jellicoe Road movie she's been working on though.
DeleteI really must read Persuasion.
ReplyDeleteYou must!
DeleteI've just bought (well, I say bought... it was free on Kindle!) North and South because HELLO! It's set in Manchester and HELLO! Elizabeth Gaskell is a Mancunian.
ReplyDeleteAlso, we have lots of her manuscripts and letters at the library I work at.
Also, HELLO! Richard Armitage plays the sexy Northerner in the TV adaptation. have you seen it? :)
Great post, gorgeous.
ps. HELLO.
HELLO! I can't believe you haven't read it already. I'm totally jealous you have her manuscripts and letters at work! That's awesome.
DeleteHELLO I love the series. Richard Armitage is sex in a waistcoat. "Look back at me." Swoooooon.
Ah, I just bought The Princess Bride a few weeks ago with some money I got for my birthday and it arrived today! I have never read it, nor watched the film, though I've heard such stunning things about both that I'm incredibly keen to. Also I totally agree with The Book Thief, because that is marvellous and wonderous. This is such a wonderful list!
ReplyDeleteYay! You're in for a treat!
