Bookish Buys: 50 Shades of Grey

Out of morbid curiousity, I typed "50 Shades of Grey" in to the Etsy search box. And... well, let's just take a look, shall we?

I'm sensing a theme... Seriously, there was a buttload of this "Laters, Baby" stuff. I haven't read the book, so I have no idea what it refers to. I'm guessing it's, like, A Thing? How... eloquent.

Northwind Threads
Lions and tigers and bears?

Sassy Alice
She says, "Stay the hell away from abuser stalkers."

Purple Monkey Tees
Uh, is this supposed to be sexy? Coz it just makes me think of this.

I just... I'm not even going to ask.

Klockwerk Kreations
OK, that one is actually kinda cool.

The Bud Bomb
That's one way of looking at it.

Forget an inner goddess - I have an inner 13-year-old, and she sniggers every time she reads this.
Daisy Dot Designs
No. Just no.

Jilly's Mom Made That
Oh HELL NO.

Really?!

Aaaaaaaand I'm done. But while I'm on the topic, I have 50 Shades of Grey on reserve at the library. There are currently 14 people in front of me. I still haven't decided if I actually want to read it or not, but I put it on reserve "just in case". I have a sneaking suspicion I'll really, really hate it, but I kinda want to read it so I know what I'm talking about when I say how terrible it is. Although I kind of feel like I do anyway, thanks to Jennifer Armintrout's amazing, hilarious recaps. So tell me - should I or shouldn't I?

  1. Wow, who knew there was so much merchandise based on the book! I have no idea what most of it is referring to either. But I did start reading the book and didn't get very far. I just couldn't get into the story and don't want to bash it just to bash it. There are plenty of books I can't get into because I don't like the main character and Ana seemed so down on herself, always saying negative things and criticizing herself, saying she wasn't good enough for Grey because he's so handsome, etc. I just don't like characters who are negative or talk badly about themselves which a lot of women tend to do in chick lit it seems. So that's why I stopped reading. But you might like it so I'd say at least give it a try and see how it goes. There's absolutely nothing wrong with reading it and enjoying it!

    1. Ana is very similar to Bella in that respect. To be honest the whole fanfic thing puts me off it more than anything.

    1. Mmm-hmm. It could have been worse, considering.

  3. I'm not going to deny it... I'm addicted to these books. I started a week ago and I'm already half way through the third.
Ana is like every young women - A little unsure of herself. Christian is a CRAZY.
Somehow by the third book they work together. The story is weak and really glazes over everything. This idiot writer added all this drama and then decided to just give up on it after 2 paragraphs.
I'll finish the books and I think I might hunt around for some better written similar books. I think I found the perfect genre for me! Don't judge ha

    1. haha I think it's like a gateway book for a lot of people. From what I've seen it's very badly written. I really don't like that it started out as Twilight fanfic either. But I know a few people who are totally obsessed with them - so I kind of want to check them out to see what exactly the appeal is, and if I feel the same.
Hmm you might want to check out a blog like Book Thingo, she reviews a lot of romance novels if you're interested in the genre.

  4. Oh my. I'm one of the people who just... didn't get 50 Shades. I read the first two hoping that I'd stumble upon what made them so popular... I'm still waiting.

Those items? They amused me. I wonder how many people have bought 50 Shades merchandise...

    1. Considering the amount of people who post about it in my FB feed on a daily basis, people don't seem to be ashamed of revealing their love for it.

    1. Bahaha I remember seeing that when Twilight came out. Hilarious. This is the description from the page... I still have no idea what it is for, and I don't think I want to know:

"This Frit Spoon is a thick glass pipe in 50 Shades of Grey! The colors seem to bloom inside the glass, you will trip out. I like them because they are so strong and durable. The more you use it the more the colors will "Pop".

Put it to your lips like Anastasia! Yea do it slowly." lol

  6. Oh my goodness, can you imagine wearing the "Don't Neglect the Balls" shirt in public? Lord knows the looks you'd get.

    1. Haha I know, right? Who would actually wear that in public?!

  7. That merchandise is just embarrassing. As for the book, well, it's terrible. It's worse than you think. The narrative is horrendous...to say the least. However, it was enjoyable to read. I found it to be hilarious and very easy to make fun of with others. I pity those who find it erotic though. Still, I recommend it for all the wrong reasons.
